Basic Engine Parts [ Internal ]

If you read previous post, you will notice few engine parts under the hood. Just by knowing them you wouldn’t know how they work yet. So let get into the parts and see what inside them that make engine an engine. These few parts you should know.

Poppet Valve

Poppet valve or mushroom valve is a valve that used in internal combustion engine to control intake (intake valve) and exhaust (exhaust valve) stroke in four stroke internal combustion engine. Most design today will use two of each valve depend on their design which small engine usually use one each. These valve located on the engine head fixed with valve spring in normally closed position.

Piston And Piston Ring

A piston is the moving component of reciprocating engines that is contained by a cylinder and is made gas-tight by piston rings. Its purpose is to transfer force from expanding gas in the cylinder to the crankshaft via a piston rod and/or connecting rod.

Connecting Rod

In a reciprocating piston engine, the connecting rod or conrod connects the piston to the crank or crankshaft. Together with the crank, they form a simple mechanism that converts linear motion into rotating motion.

Crankshaft

The crankshaft, sometimes casually abbreviated to crank, is the part of an engine which translates reciprocating linear piston motion into rotation. To convert the reciprocating motion into rotation, the crankshaft has "crank throws" or "crankpins", additional bearing surfaces whose axis is offset from that of the crank, to which the "big ends" of the connecting rods from each cylinder attach.

Ok. Now you know what the parts are. So, how do they assembled to make them work?

Pictures worth than thousand words. Do they?
